Earth Day Celebration Event

Double Your Impact!

Happy Earth Day! The Lowcountry Food Bank is celebrating our sustainable triumphs that help fight food waste and bring more nutritious food to neighbors while reducing our carbon footprint. According to the U.S Environmental Protection Agency, in the United States, food is the single largest category of material placed in municipal landfills, where it emits methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.

Your gift today can ensure that we continue to collect more food that is still perfectly nutritious that is otherwise going to waste. To practice reducing your food waste at home you can:

  • Before going to the grocery store, make a shopping list and stick to it
  • Remember that the "best before" date is just a manufacturing standard and its usually very conservative. Most food can still be eaten past this date
  • Buy only what you can eat before the food spoils - if you have leftovers, freeze them
  • Buy from local farmers. Food is fresher and they consume less resources to bring the food to the market
  • When eating out, bring home leftovers and eat them
