Subaru Crosstrek vs. The Competition
Subaru Crosstrek vs. Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-30
Compare the Subaru Crosstrek vs. Subcompact Crossover Competitors in Charleston
While Charleston drivers have several options in the subcompact crossover segment, the Subaru Crosstrek distinguishes itself by delivering real versatility rather than just a taller seating position. It offers comfortable accommodations, flexible cargo space, a smooth ride, and well-equipped trim levels. Plus, standard features like Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, Subaru X-MODE®, and high ground clearance help give the Crosstrek a distinct advantage beyond the asphalt-especially in its Wilderness trim.
The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek is available for sale or lease at Crews Subaru of Charleston. Here's a quick look at how it compares to two prominent class competitors, the Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-30.
Subaru Crosstrek vs. Honda HR-V
- All-Weather Capability: Every Subaru Crosstrek includes standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, Subaru X-MODE® traction management, and at least 8.7 inches of ground clearance. This setup provides dependable traction for wet roads, sandy coastal routes, or unexpected weather conditions around Charleston. The Honda HR-V, by comparison, starts with front-wheel drive, and while all-wheel drive is available, it requires an upgrade and doesn't deliver the same off-road-oriented design found in the Crosstrek.
- Performance: All gasoline-powered Crosstrek models feature a 2.5-liter SUBARU BOXER® engine that produces 182 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. Subaru also offers the Crosstrek as a hybrid model with 194 horsepower. The Honda HR-V has a lone 2.0-liter engine with 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque, and currently does not offer a hybrid version.
- Trail-Ready Hardware: Thanks to standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, Subaru X-MODE® traction management, and a higher ride height, the Crosstrek is well prepared for outdoor adventures. The available Crosstrek Wilderness trim takes capability even further with dual-function X-MODE®, increased ground clearance, skid plates, and all-terrain tires. In contrast, the HR-V's optional AWD system is primarily designed to improve traction on slippery pavement rather than tackling rugged terrain.
- Technology: All Subaru Crosstrek models above the base trim come standard with an 11.6-inch touchscreen that provides a more modern and intuitive interface than the HR-V's smaller 9-inch display. Subaru also equips the Crosstrek with standard driver-assist features like Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering and steering-responsive headlights. The HR-V's adaptive cruise control system is less capable, and it does not offer cornering headlamps in any configuration.
Subaru Crosstrek vs. Mazda CX-30
- Interior Space: Although both models compete in the subcompact crossover segment, the Subaru Crosstrek uses its interior layout more efficiently than the Mazda CX-30. The Crosstrek offers additional headroom and shoulder room, along with improved outward visibility.
- Cargo Flexibility: With the second row occupied, both vehicles offer comparable cargo capacity. However, with the rear seats folded, the Subaru Crosstrek expands capacity to 54.7 cubic feet, giving it a clear advantage over the CX-30, which offers a maximum of 45.2 cubic feet.
- Infotainment System: Most Subaru Crosstrek models include an 11.6-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto. The Mazda CX-30 uses a smaller display and relies primarily on a rotary control knob, which can feel less intuitive than a traditional touchscreen interface.
- Driver Assistance Features: Both crossovers provide a solid selection of driver-assist technologies. However, Subaru includes a few features as standard equipment that are limited to higher trims in the CX-30, including lane-centering adaptive cruise control and steering-responsive headlights.
