Compare Small Crossover SUVs in North Charleston

The Subaru Crosstrek is an exceptionally well-rounded subcompact crossover. It offers a comfortable cabin, flexible cargo capacity, and many appealing amenities while retaining city-friendly space requirements. Additionally, thanks to standard features like Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, Subaru X-MODE®, and tall ground clearance, the Crosstrek is well suited to exploring beyond the asphalt, especially in it is Wilderness trim.

While small crossovers make up the industry's most competitive segment, the Subaru Crosstrek more than holds its own. To demonstrate this, here's a quick look at how it compares in a few key areas to prominent competitors like the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-30, and Toyota RAV4.

Subaru Crosstrek vs. Honda HR-V

The Subaru Crosstrek and Honda HR-V both have 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines as their standard powertrain. The HR-V has a slight advantage in horsepower (158 vs. 152), while the Crosstrek delivers a bit more torque (145 vs. 138 lb-ft). However, if you're seeking something more potent to power your Mount Pleasant drives, all Crosstrek trims above the base model upgrade to a 2.5-liter engine with 182 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. The Honda HR-V doesn't offer an available performance upgrade.

The Subaru Crosstrek is the clear choice for outdoor enthusiasts seeking to venture beyond the asphalt, thanks to its standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and X-MODE® traction management. The Crosstrek Wilderness takes things to the next level with all-terrain tires, specialized suspension tuning, dual-function X-MODE®, and more. While the HR-V offers all-wheel drive, it's mainly designed for on-road driving and isn't standard in any trim.

Both models come standard with 7-inch infotainment touchscreens and smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. However, all Crosstrek models above the base trim get an 11.6-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity. The Honda HR-V's 9-inch touchscreen upgrade and wireless smartphone integration are limited to its highest trim level (EX-L).

Subaru Crosstrek vs. Mazda CX-30

While the Subaru Crosstrek and Mazda CX-30 are both subcompact crossovers, the Crosstrek is among the segment's larger models. As such, it's able to provide more passenger and cargo space while retaining a convenient physical footprint. Taller drivers will appreciate the Crosstrek's additional 1.7 inches of headroom and 1.2 inches of legroom compared to the CX-30.

The Crosstrek's space advantage extends to its practicality. Both models reserve 20 cubic feet for cargo behind their second rows. However, when your Hanahan outings require more storage, you can fold the Crosstrek's rear seats to reveal 54.7 cubic feet. The CX-30's cargo area maxes out at 45.2 cubic feet.

For larger cargo that doesn't fit inside the vehicle, the Crosstrek offers raised roof rails on all but the base trim. Wilderness models have reinforced roof rails that can hold up to 700 pounds while stationary (165 pounds when driving), making them excellent for rooftop tents. The CX-30 offers low-profile roof rails as an option, but they aren't as usable as raised rails.

The Subaru Crosstrek's base trim has a 7-inch touchscreen, while higher tiers boast an 11.6-inch touchscreen. Most CX-30 models have an 8.8-inch infotainment display, while a 10.25-inch display is reserved for the highest trim levels. Additionally, Mazda's control-dial interface isn't as intuitive or accessible as a traditional touchscreen.

Subaru Crosstrek vs. Toyota RAV4

As a compact crossover, the Toyota RAV4 is larger than the subcompact Subaru Crosstrek. However, that doesn't automatically make it a better pick for every driver. In fact, many RAV4 shoppers end up choosing the Crosstrek once they realize how much value it packs into a more efficient, agile, and affordable package.

The Crosstrek delivers the added practicality of an SUV while retaining minimal space requirements, making it better suited to navigating busy streets and crowded parking lots. Additionally, despite the size difference, the Crosstrek still offers more ground clearance than the RAV4, especially in its Wilderness trim.

The Subaru Crosstrek was designed for adventure, offering standard attributes like Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and Subaru X-MODE® advanced traction management. The Wilderness trim takes that capability to a new level with Yokohama® GEOLANDAR all-terrain tires, dual-function X-MODE®, skid plates, protective body cladding, and terrain-tuned suspension with 9.3-inches of ground clearance.

While you can get all-wheel drive in the Toyota RAV4, it's more of an on-road system and isn't standard for any trim level. Previous RAV4 iterations had off-road-oriented options, but the automaker has since discontinued both the Adventure and TRD Off-Road trims.

Subaru offers the Crosstrek at a significantly lower starting MSRP than the RAV4, making it an appealing choice for Charleston shoppers who want an accommodating and well-equipped crossover for an attractive value proposition.
