The flat-four engine underneath the Forester's hood has a 2.5-liter displacement and produces an output of 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. Although acceleration is decent, the engine truly shines in the fuel efficiency department. Even with power going to all four wheels, the Forester is still able to achieve an EPA-estimated 26 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on the highway.
Credit is also due to the auto start-stop system for eliminating unnecessary fuel consumption and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that saves on energy with its gearless mechanism. Paddle shifters for the CVT are added on the Sport and Touring for more operational convenience.

This model year marks the extension of keyless access with push-button engine start to the Premium trim, which also gains two additional speakers and a Wi-Fi hotspot. At the Limited trim level, Subaru adds climate controls in the front passenger side (in addition to that of the driver), and the liftgate gains powered operation.
